From Effie Irene Pearce's scrapbook:

My mother's scrapbook includes a printed leaflet sent to her by her Aunty Phyl (specially to put in the scrapbook), headed "Report of Woodlands Belgian Hostel - November 16th to Marrch 10th 1919."

It starts:

"In the Autumn of 1914, as Belgians were pouring into England in thousands, the fine old house, Woodlands Westcombe House, was offered by its ownerm Sir Alfred Yarrow, as a Hostel for Refugees. A Committee was quickly formed and an appeal issued for funds, furniture etc, met with a generous response. The Hostel was opened on November 16th, 1914".

The report continues with detailed information, and ends with a list of names of members of the Committee, including Phyllis Cowell as Honorary Secretary.
